2nd Degree Black Belt
1) When did you start Hapkido?
2) How long have you been training in Martial Arts, did you do anything before Hapkido?
I started Hapkido training when I was about 30 years of age. That means I have been training for 18 years . I had previously trained in Judo for three years back when I was 8 years old.
3) What made you choose Hapkido?
Growing up I was involved in quite a few different sports such as athletics ,rugby, water polo, cycling , weights and fitness training. I was looking for something different , new and I was looking to achieve better flexibility throughout my body due to numerous injuries over the years. A training partner from the gym suggested Hapkido. He had been a black belt with Northern Beaches Hapkido and wanted to go back. So from the first class , it was Master Geister’s class when he still had hair, I was sold.
4) Hapkido covers so many aspects of a Martial Art, which is your favourite or the one that suits you the most?
Hapkido has many facets which makes it exciting, challenging and rewarding. The aspects that best suit me would have to be grappling , throws and falls .I enjoy the challenges that kicking gives me , and the technical aspect of self defence is thought provoking and creative .
5) As an instructor, what motivates you to come down and teach?
As an instructor I hope my students enjoy the journey and find the person within .To gain self awareness , self respect and respect for others . I truly believe that your mind is a great power and want to help others learn how to strengthen it. I’ve had great enjoyment teaching and have learnt so much. I hope with hard work and dedication, that I become the best I can be and hope to be able to instil this in my students .Anyone can achieve great things if one has the will to achieve them.
6) What is one of the best books you have read?
I don’t have a favourite book, but have read many. Angels and Demons, Divinci Code and any James Patterson book. One interesting book was about the serial killer Ted Bundy , written by good friend. Murder mysteries are my thing.
7) Interests outside of Hapkido?
When I’m not training at Hapkido , I enjoy pumping iron, snow skiing, going to the beach ,walking the dog, movies and going on holidays . I most enjoy spending time with my wife and son.
8) How long can you see yourself training Hapkido?
I’m not sure how long I can continue training at Hapkido . I hope for many years to come, as long as the body holds up. Where there’s a will there’s a way.
9) What do you like about our Club at Northern Beaches Hapkido?
I have to thank all my training partners , friends and students for making training at Brookvale Dojang as enjoyable as it has been for me. Hapkido is a great way of life.
